The best beaches of the Atacama Desert
Although Atacama is famous for being the driest desert in the world, its coast hides some of the most beautiful beaches in Chile: white sands, warm waters and a turquoise color that looks Caribbean. Here is our selection of must-see beaches for your next trip.
1. Bahía Inglesa
The most famous and best-serviced. Ideal if you want comfort: restaurants, lodging, kayak rentals and safe beaches for swimming. Perfect for families.
2. Playa La Virgen
Considered by many the most beautiful beach in Chile. More remote and wild, with a spectacular setting of rock and white sand. Bring everything you need, as services are limited.
3. Playa Portofino
A well-kept secret, a favorite of surfers and of those seeking total disconnection. Consistent waves and a laid-back vibe far from the crowds.
4. Caleta Pan de Azúcar
Inside Pan de Azúcar National Park, it combines beach with nature: here the desert meets the sea and you can see Humboldt penguins, otters and rich endemic flora.
Which one to choose?
If you travel with family or want comfort, Bahía Inglesa is your best option. If you're after postcard landscapes and don't mind the rustic side, Playa La Virgen will win you over. For surfing, Portofino; for nature, Pan de Azúcar. Best of all: they're relatively close and you can combine them in a single trip!
