3-day itinerary through the Atacama Desert
Do you have a long weekend and want to see the best of the Atacama coast? This 3-day itinerary, based around Caldera/Bahía Inglesa, combines dream beaches, nature and disconnection. Ideal for those flying into Copiapó.
Day 1: Bahía Inglesa and Caldera
Arrive in Copiapó, pick up your car and head to Bahía Inglesa (50 min). Spend the morning on its turquoise beaches, have a fresh-seafood lunch and in the afternoon visit Caldera: its pier, the Paleontological Museum and a sunset by the sea. Stay overnight in Bahía Inglesa.
Day 2: Pan de Azúcar National Park
Get up early and drive north to Pan de Azúcar National Park (approx. 2 hours). Take a boat trip to see Pan de Azúcar Island with its Humboldt penguins, explore the viewpoints and enjoy the cove. Return to Bahía Inglesa or stay overnight in Chañaral.
Day 3: Playa La Virgen and Portofino
Devote the last day to the most hidden beaches: Playa La Virgen, considered one of the most beautiful in Chile, and quiet Portofino, a surfers' favorite. Bring water and food, since services are limited. Head back to Copiapó in the afternoon for your flight.
Tips for this itinerary
- Rent a car: public transport between beaches is scarce.
- Book accommodation in advance in January and February.
- Fill up on fuel in Caldera or Chañaral before the long stretches.
